Socially Situated AI: What It Means and Why It Matters
نویسنده
چکیده
Classical AI focuses agent design purely on the agent. Various alternatives to classical AI, such as behavior-based AI and situated action, propose that agent design should include, not just the agent, but also its environment. These alternatives fall short of their own stated goals, however, in that they tend to include only the physical objects with which the agent interacts, leaving out such environmental factors as the audience with which the agent interacts, the people who are judging the agent as a scientific success or failure, and the designer of the agent himor herself. Here, I argue that ignoring the social and cultural context of the agent actually leads to technical problems in the design of the agent, and propose a model for AI research that includes the full context of the agent. At the same time, I propose that the problems socially situated AI addresses are particularly pressing for applications in AI and entertainment, where the utility of an agent depends not so much on the internal correctness of the agent’s actions as on the effect of the agent on the user.

AI and Developing Socially-Engaged Computational Thinkers
This position paper reflects on why we want greater participation in the computing sciences, what ‘greater participation’ means and should mean, and on the particular characteristics of AI that recommend it as an enticement and way into computing. Primary tenets are that the need for and training of socially-engaged ‘computational thinkers’ (Wing, 2006) is the most important motivation for incr...
متن کاملThomas Jefferson Why Race Matters
ichael Levin’s long-awaited book on race has finally arrived, every bit as powerful and insightful as his admirers had hoped it would be. Why Race Matters does exactly what the title promises—it removes all illusions about the insignificance of race, and explains what racial differences mean for a multi-racial society. It is a thorough, overwhelmingly convincing treatment of America’s most seri...
متن کاملThe ‘What’, ‘How’ and the ‘Why’ of Evolutionary Robotics
The field of embodied artificial intelligence is maturing, and as such has progressed from what questions (“what is embodiment?”) to how questions: how should the body plan of an autonomous robot be designed to maximize the chance that it will exhibit a desired set of behaviors. In order to stand on its own however, rather than a reaction to classical AI, the field of embodied AI must address w...
متن کاملWiddowson and Classroom Discourse
Drawing on recent developments in linguistic description and applied linguistics, it can be concluded that learning a language necessitates getting to know something and being able to do something with that knowledge: competence, and performance. Structural approach to language description attaches importance to the former; communicative approach to the latter. Appropriate classroom discours...
متن کاملPlaying with Cases: Rendering Expressive Music with Case-Based Reasoning
The simple rendering of a quantized score by a sequencer sounds monotonous and uninteresting. On the other hand, musicians make intentional deviations from the score to convey their own interpretation of the music. These deviations constitute what we call expressiveness and are mostly intended to clarify the musical structure of the composition. This includes the metrical structure (Sloboda 198...
